My Story

Lisa M. Johnson (She/Hers/Her) is a cisgender, Black woman and devoted mother, native to the dynamic landscape of New York City. With a Bachelor of Science in Community and Human Services and a Master’s in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness from the esteemed New York University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Lisa’s academic journey forms the foundation of her impactful career. At the core of her beliefs is the understanding that people desire to be seen, heard and valued. Beyond the realm of motherhood, Lisa considers her most profound achievement to be the transformative work she has experienced with clients who, at one point, faced the darkness of suicidal thoughts. In these moments of vulnerability, Lisa worked collaboratively with clients, accompanying them on a journey of rediscovery that transcended pain and despair. Lisa views witnessing individuals reclaiming joy in their lives through counseling and advocacy work a testament to her unwavering commitment to mental health and wellness. She is eternally grateful to have been invited to be a part of each of her client’s healing journeys. As a licensed NYS Mental Health Counselor, Lisa channels her fervor into advocacy and social justice, encapsulated by her poignant personal mission statement: “To commit myself to ongoing education and engagement in mental health and the decolonization of education and psychology.” This is more than mantra for Lisa; it’s a call to action. With an unwavering dedication spanning over two decades dedicated to public education, Lisa emerges as a seasoned advocate for transformative change. Additionally, she serves as Director of Programs for Change Agent Academy whose goal is to empower educators at all levels to critically approach racial issues, develop transformative practices and terms, and learn to recognize and challenge inequitable patterns in education. Her wealth of experience extends beyond the classroom, encompassing a profound understanding of the systemic injustices that persist within the educational landscape. Having personally navigated and witnessed these disparities, Lisa’s commitment to dismantling barriers and fostering equitable educational experiences has become the driving force of her professional journey. Through her pivotal role at The Miranda Foundation, she endeavors to leverage her extensive knowledge and firsthand encounters to create transformative change. Lisa’s vision is resolute: to create an inclusive, healthy and empowering environment for those most marginalized, allowing them to thrive.
